Las Tias Food Truck Joins Tierra Central's Food Hub (Story 30/40)

“I found that I love cooking, I'm good at it, and people like it.” Luz, owner of Las Tias food truck

Tierra Central’s food truck hub is growing! Las Tias food truck is teaming up with the Economic Development team and stationing its restaurant on wheels at Tierra Central.

Food truck owners understand finding a well-equipped and comfortable space for their restaurant is challenging. This challenge to micro-enterprises and food businesses is one Tierra Central hopes to address by creating a communal space for commerce, food, and gatherings in an accessible, well-trafficked location.

Tierra Central welcomes Las Tias and honors Luz’s animo by sharing a portion of her business journey…

Las Tias food truck is family owned and operated. The owner is Luz, a Mexico City native and local foodie. She ventured into the journey of entrepreneurship only four months ago, and with her family’s encouraging support, Las Tias food truck is making a name for itself throughout San Diego.

Luz: “Everything started when I was little. My grandparents were business owners; they sold barbacoa in Mexico City. When I got married, I came to the United States and started working in a kitchen cutting vegetables. I became a kitchen manager. I was in charge of opening a kitchen. I oversaw eight people, which I had never done before. That's where I learned how to organize inventory, how to order supplies, and acquire necessary permits.”

Working as a kitchen manager helped Luz realize she acquired the skills to replicate what her employer did, but in a setting where she was the owner instead of the employee. Her opportunities and wage as a manager were limited, and Luz knew that. And in due course, Luz’s belief that her path in life included opening a business for her daughters and family came to fruition.

“My family in Mexico can identify with me. We are all immigrants and we have our own stories. That's why our truck is called Las Tias. We all have tias: the angry tia, the chismosa tia, the widow tia and the one that never got married. And I love them all. It means family. I'm a tia - everyone is a tia.”

Tias refers to one’s parents or grandparents’ siblings - the elder women in Hispanic families who often resemble mother figures, exemplifying unique qualities and traits. The reference to tias symbolizes the bond between nieces and tias and the depth linking familial bonds to one’s pursuits and dreams.

“If it wasn't for the organization or Sonia I wouldn't be here. Before I was at a liquor store and didn't have many sales. Here at Tierra Central, we are in a better spot. She has offered me programs, support, and business classes. I am very thankful and I hope we get to do our best for the community.”

Las Tias offers Mexican food like huaraches and tortas, including special breakfasts options on weekends like chilaquiles - check them out at Tierra Central!
