San Diego Food Justice Project’s Second Cohort of Grant Recipients Begin Food Business Education Course
To new beginnings! The second cohort participating in the local education effort, San Diego Food Justice Project, started courses earlier this month. Designed to mobilize and equip entrepreneurs, the 8-week learning experience is enhanced by a network of ingenious and dependable people, including our Economic Development team. The vision is for local business owners to succeed steadily or, in the less bright experiences, fail quickly so they can grow in entrepreneurship in ways that make sense for them, and still be backed by a network ready to assist throughout the entrepreneurship journey.
City Heights CDC’s Economic Development team has partnered with the Regional Entrepreneurship Center (REC) Innovation Lab at San Diego Miramar College, the COOK Alliance, Jacobs Center, and Business For Good, in executing the 8-week college-accredited course educating owners on the structural parts of business so they can journey into entrepreneurship legitimately. Courses are taught virtually and in-person at Miramar Community College in English and Spanish.
The course is intentionally designed to educate and empower, and for this to be achieved students must commit to seeing the learning process through to the best of their ability. The best part of our team being a part of this program is that business owners are met where they are, thus their backgrounds and current realities influence the support our team offers mentees.
We are looking for more business owners to apply for our upcoming Cohort 3. The requisites are that the business is food-related, consistent participation and engagement with the course, and submission and approval of an application. Business owners will gain perspective on entrepreneurial responsibilities, acquire college credits and connection with Miramar’s support systems, mentorship and resource information from organizers, and a need-based stipend ranging from $2,500-$7,500.
