You Gave People Hope This Year. Let's Keep Going!
Let's not sugar coat it: 2020 was hard.
The year was endlessly difficult. Yet you, the amazing City Heights community, chose to step into the confusion and to be a force for good.
When a novel virus seemed to fog every corner of the world in fear, you chose to step up, volunteer, donate, and sponsor meals for hungry neighbors.
You provided hundreds of hot meals to home bound elderly.
You helped us give away thousands of pounds of pantry food, helped young people continue their education, and sponsored bags of fresh produce from refugee gardeners.
You’ve shown up for the community in some big ways, and now we’re asking you to show up in the most important way yet:
Right now, thousands of our neighbors across San Diego County are at risk of eviction.
Here's why the eviction crisis matters for all of us:
Eviction causes displacement and uncertainty for families.
Eviction is uniquely painful for children, often forcing them to change schools or drop out altogether.
Evictions affect your credit report and make it hard to find more housing, they stigmatize families and individuals by leaving a mark on their financial record, increases the likelihood you’ll end up in the emergency room or homeless, and it dramatically increases the risk of trauma and mental illness.
Unaffordable and unstable housing dramatically reduced spending on food, healthcare, transportation and other basic necessities.
1 out of 17 renters in the U.S. is evicted at some point. This was before the pandemic. There are an estimated 20% of renters in the US at risk of eviction when all the eviction moratoriums and financial assistance run out.
But we are not powerless to help! Last year, you helped us launch One Month Away, a first-of-its-kind eviction prevention program designed to help keep people safely at home and off the streets.
Since that launch, together we’ve helped over 300 households avoid eviction and stay in their homes. That was made possible by donors like you. Will you help us keep even more people safely housed and off the streets?
If you’re concerned about homelessness in San Diego, donate to help prevent evictions this holiday season.
