New Housing Update: Sally Wong Demolition Confirmed
Within the next month, the ‘Sally Wong’ building on 41st and University Avenue will be demolished to make room for new affordable housing.
The process of removing any potential hazardous materials has already started, and full demolition will begin very soon. In the meantime, our staff and partners will be hosting focused community engagement gatherings outside the building as we work with the community throughout this process.
Across the street from the Sally Wong building is a vacant lot that will also become mixed-use affordable housing. In the mean time, we will convert the lot from an empty eyesore into a ‘placemaking’ project designed to benefit the community.
If you haven’t, please respond to this short survey letting us know what you think the empty lot should be for the next two years. The responses have been so helpful as community members step up to share their hopes for the space.
As we prepare to say goodbye to the Sally Wong building, we’re inviting community members to share stories of the space. Do you know someone who lived there? Do you have historical photos of the building, or maybe a memory about it? We want to acknowledge and honor the history of our community, so please comment below if you have something to share!
