Before COVID-19, an average of ten households were evicted per day in San Diego county.

Everyone we talked to seemed shocked by the number—”Is it really that many every day?!” In the wake of the virus, that number will grow if we don’t do something. Now.

You have heard about the eviction moratorium we worked hard with the community to get passed in San Diego, and it passed unanimously. Residents cannot be evicted right now, but they still need to pay their rent. Many have lost their jobs. Many were living month-to-month before this crisis, and now it’s only a matter of time before their rent debt is due. What then?

Keep your neighbors off the streets and safe at home.

Will hundreds, even thousands, end up on the streets? What will happen to our communities if the most vulnerable working-class people are forced out of their homes by this crisis?

Will we stand by and do nothing? You know we won’t.

Here’s how it works.

Nearly all of the thousands of people currently living on the streets of San Diego county are there because they couldn’t pay their rent, and that number will sky rocket if unemployed families aren’t offered either a way to pay their rent or forgiveness of their debt.

Our One Month Away program provides one-time funds of up to $1000 to help low-income renters who do not have enough income to pay rent, either because of a COVID-19 job loss or a personal emergency (usually medical or job-related). We launched this program in October 2019 to prevent low-income, at-risk tenants from being evicted and ending up on the streets.

Clients provide proof of income/loss of income and of their rental lease and the check is sent directly to the landlord or property manager.  We are currently one of the very few organizations providing rental assistance funding and prioritizing immigrants and undocumented renters. Our expert case workers receive 20-40 calls a day now and we recently added another staff member to help handle the growing number of requests. Donations from compassionate neighbors like you enable us to offer this service, so thank you!

While we hope the government will further support at-risk renters, we can’t afford to wait.

If you would like to help keep a household at home, safe, and off the streets, please donate. If you have the means to give any amount at all, please do it. Your gift could be the difference needed to keep your community off the streets and at home. Give below.

A HUGE thank you to these major donors!
