Meet Lucero, A New Promotora!
Friends, please welcome Lucero to the amazing team of promotoras!
The San Diego Latino Health Coalition’s team of promotoras are lay healthcare advocates in the community working to build trust, connect neighbors with resources, and make sure everyone has what they need to survive this pandemic.
Miriam Rodriguez, former City Heights CDC board member and lead promotora, is thrilled to have Lucero join the team: “She was already doing this work with her family, so it was a natural transition for her!”
As a young mother and fairly recent arrival to the United States, Lucero understands just how scary it can be to struggle alone, and she loves the work.
“I’ve enjoyed helping people, and I’ve been lucky. People trust me and are taking the advice and getting help, and it makes me so happy.”
That part about trust is big. There isn’t much a promotora can do to serve a community if she isn’t trusted, and Lucero has an ace up her sleeve: “I think of my daughter as my assistant. She warms people up and makes them smile for me, they feel comfortable around her.”
The lifesaving work these women do every day may often go unnoticed, but not today. We honor them, thank them for their work helping people find medical care and vaccinations, and we’re thrilled to welcome Lucero to the team!
