Meet Alexis, our new Senior Program Manager!
Alexis knows how it feels to be forced out of City Heights. She’s been displaced.
“I remember the landlord talking about how he was going to make more money and that would mean us moving out,” she recalled.
“I grew up in a single parent home. Back then, City Heights was such a different place. I remember University and Fairmount were mostly family-owned homes and bodegas and little shops, and I saw things shift.”
As many of us who grew up around here know, that ‘shift’ was significant. It meant gentrification, displacement, and a lot of heartache for working class folks, and it fuels Alexis’s passion for economic justice, a passion she’s now bringing back to City Heights.
“My passion for the community and my knowledge of the community were both big reasons for why I wanted to come back and work in City Heights,” she shared. “I’ve been displaced. I’ve experienced homelessness and life in a single parent home. It was my mother's and the community's resilience that helped us overcome the same struggles many are still facing today.”
Alexis will be working with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and young people dreaming of a better future. Her passion is so evident in everything she says, and we are thrilled to see our economic development moving to another level!
Welcome, Alexis!
