Not forgotten, Not Alone—Meet Mr. Furnald
We’ve talked a lot about helping keep families in their homes, but what about people living alone?
This is Mr. Furnald, a friend and and resident we’ve known for many years. Mr. Furnald is homebound and lives alone on a fixed income with no other caretakers.
When we deliver food to his home, he asks that we call five minutes ahead of time because it takes him that long just to get to the door. His life is a delicate balance of food deliveries, a fixed income, and other essential forms of support. If just one of those things is taken away, he could end up in the hospital or without housing.
For someone like Mr. Furnald, it just takes one bump to his rent and he’s out on the streets. With his health problems, that could be a death sentence.
When you think of preventing evictions and keeping people safe through One Month Away, do you think of people like Mr. Furnald?
Every time we walk up his sidewalk, he is beaming. The same huge smile, the same “Thank you so much!!” and the same joy. He’s so grateful any time someone comes to visit, and he knows he can rely on us if his situation changes. We’ll do whatever we can to make sure he’s safe and at home.
This holiday season, we’re working to prevent evictions for 20 households. These are people living day to day, paycheck by paycheck. They’re veterans, formerly homeless, elderly, homebound, and shut-ins.
