Financial Literacy
For multi-ethnic residents in City Heights to move out of poverty and towards financial self-reliance, a comprehensive, accessible community-based program founded on trust, developing opportunities for increased discretionary income and clearly addressing relevant financial education must be provided. CHCDC is building on current successes with area residents to "help families earn and save more money".
CHCDC incorporations easily understood, relevant, financial education and money management principals into a broad base of existing services. By increasing the exposure of participants to relevant pieces of financial literacy training and support more frequently and consciously, CHCDC incrementally teaches a basic core of knowledge. Using this foundation, residents are prepared to begin to earn/save more, identify discretionary income, and find beneficial ways to use established banking systems successfully.
Experience has shown how difficult it is to consistently engage busy families of very limited income in meetings devoted solely to "financial literacy".
Building on participant's current investment with CHCDC and the established trust within the community, CHCDC plans to make the process of education more user friendly by increasing Low to Mid-Income (LMI) residents exposure to money management and finance education in a seamless way with other services, such as the following:
- Gets to Work Workshops
- Food Cooperation Distributions
- RSS and RAB meetings
- Financial Education Seminars/ On Site computer lab activities
The overall community impact of this process is that collaboratively, one potential customer at a time, we are working together with residents
